Privacy policy

Last updated: 2026-08-25

In short: what you learn in HiAn stays on your iPhone by default. An account is optional, no advertising identifier is read, and there is no third-party analytics or advertising SDK in the app. We do not track you and we do not sell anything about you.

1. What this policy covers

The HiAn iOS app (bundle identifier com.anlearn.vietnamese) and the website at hian.study. The data controller is HiAn; write to privacy@hian.study with anything in this document.

2. Using HiAn without an account

If you never create an account, all of the following stays on your device. It is not transmitted to us and we cannot see it:

  • Your learning progress — per-phrase mastery, review schedule, and which answers were right
  • Lessons, conversations and practice sessions completed, and minutes practised per day
  • Phrases you save, and the names, ages and relationships you enter into the family tree
  • Your learning preferences — language, dialect, voice, daily goal, level
  • Pronunciation recordings (see section 5)

This lives in a SQLite database inside the app's sandbox and is removed when you delete the app.

3. If you create an account (optional)

You can sign in with Apple. From that point, the complete list of what we store on our server is:

  • The opaque identifier Apple gives us, plus your email address and name if you chose to share them
  • A random per-install string we generate to tell your devices apart — not an iOS device identifier — along with platform, app version, OS version and device model
  • The learning progress and learning events being backed up
  • Your subscription status and the Apple-signed transaction behind it

If you use Apple's Hide My Email, we only ever receive the relay address and cannot see your real one.

4. What we do not do

  • We do not read the advertising identifier (IDFA) and never present the App Tracking Transparency prompt
  • There is no third-party analytics or advertising SDK in the app — no Google Analytics, no Firebase, no Facebook SDK, no Amplitude, no Mixpanel
  • We do not access your location, contacts, photos or calendar
  • We do not sell personal information or share it for advertising
  • We do not train AI models on your learning data

5. Microphone and recordings

The microphone is used only when you press record in a pronunciation exercise. The recording is written to the device's cache directory, used to draw your pitch curve against the native one, and deleted with the session. Recordings are never uploaded. There is no speech recognition and no cloud processing; the comparison runs entirely on the phone.

6. Payments

Apple processes subscription payments. We never receive, see or store card details. The app forwards Apple's signed transaction to our server so the purchase can be verified, and we store the resulting subscription status.

7. Retention and deletion

We keep backed-up data for as long as your account exists. You can delete the account from inside the app at any time — Settings → Account → Delete my account — which removes your identity records, devices, progress, learning events and entitlement from our server. Apple's transaction record is retained for accounting and refund enquiries. Learning data on your phone is left untouched and disappears when you delete the app.

8. Children

HiAn is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, delete or export your data, including under the GDPR and the CCPA. Account deletion is immediate and self-service inside the app; for anything else write to privacy@hian.study and we will respond within 30 days.

10. Where data is held

On a single server in Vietnam, with everything in transit protected by TLS. Refresh tokens are stored only as hashes, so a database leak cannot be replayed as a session.

11. Changes

If this policy changes we will update the date at the top of this page, and tell you inside the app if the change is material.
