# HiAn — Learn Vietnamese > HiAn is an iPhone app that teaches spoken Vietnamese to people who need it > for someone in their life: a partner, in-laws, colleagues, a grandmother. > Its distinguishing feature is that it teaches the Vietnamese kinship pronoun > system against the learner's own real family, rather than as a grammar > chapter. Everything ships inside the app and works offline. ## What it is - **Platform**: iPhone, iOS 17 or later. No Android version. - **Interface languages**: English and Korean. - **Language taught**: Vietnamese, Northern and Southern dialects. - **Price**: free tier with no account required; optional Premium subscription (monthly or annual) priced by the App Store in local currency. - **Website**: https://hian.study ## What is in it (content build 1.0.0) - 1,712 phrases, every one recorded by a native speaker - 6,292 recordings across 2 regional voices (Northern female, Southern female) - 11 worlds, 89 scenarios, 299 lessons - 95 multi-turn conversations - 79 relationship drills, each a live query over the phrase library - 72 culture notes - 1,025 individual words with their own practice module - 60 slang and texting entries, each with guidance on when not to use it Free tier: 8 lessons, 20 scenarios spread across all 11 worlds, all 1,025 words, and the full spaced-repetition schedule. Premium opens the remaining 1,484 phrases and everything else. ## How it teaches - **Kinship pronouns first.** Vietnamese has no neutral "you"; the learner enters their real family and the app resolves and drills the specific pronoun pairs they need. - **Spaced repetition** on every phrase, scheduled per item. - **Whole conversations**, not isolated sentences — the correct reply depends on the previous turn. - **Naturalness grading**: where the textbook form and the natural form differ, both are shown and labelled. - **Tone practice by pitch curve**: the learner's recording is compared to the native one and the difference is described in words. There is deliberately no pronunciation score, because a percentage would be invented rather than measured. - **Exercise fairness**: wrong answers are matched to the correct one for length and meaning, so a question cannot be solved by option shape alone. A question that cannot be built fairly is dropped rather than asked. ## Privacy Learner data stays on the device by default. An account is optional and exists only for backup and cross-device sync. There is no advertising identifier, no third-party analytics or advertising SDK, and pronunciation recordings are never uploaded — the pitch comparison runs entirely on the phone. Accounts can be deleted from inside the app. ## Key pages - [Home](https://hian.study/): what the app is and who it is for - [What's inside](https://hian.study/features): the full curriculum breakdown - [Pricing](https://hian.study/pricing): free tier and subscription terms - [Guides](https://hian.study/blog): long-form articles on learning Vietnamese - [Privacy policy](https://hian.study/privacy) - [Terms of use](https://hian.study/terms) - [Support](https://hian.study/support) ## Guides - [Vietnamese pronouns: the complete guide](https://hian.study/blog/vietnamese-pronouns) — how the kinship pronoun system works, with the age rules and the self-reference rule. - [The six Vietnamese tones](https://hian.study/blog/vietnamese-tones) — what each tone does to the voice, which pairs learners confuse, and why Southern Vietnamese uses five. - [Northern or Southern Vietnamese](https://hian.study/blog/northern-vs-southern-vietnamese) — the practical differences and how to choose. - [Meeting your Vietnamese partner's parents](https://hian.study/blog/meeting-vietnamese-parents) — what to say, what to bring, and what happens at the table. - [How long does it take to learn Vietnamese](https://hian.study/blog/how-long-to-learn-vietnamese) — an honest timeline. - [Vietnamese for heritage speakers](https://hian.study/blog/heritage-speakers-vietnamese) — for people who understand but cannot speak.
